PATTANI - A teacher was killed and another wounded by motorcycle gunmen on Friday while on their way to an event to assist people mourning for the late King.
Two insurgents on a motorcycle followed their car as they left the Informal Education office in Mayo district in Pattani. The two women were going to help dye clothing black for mourners of King Bhumibol Adulyadej at a function organised nearby.
They had driven only 50 metres when the motorcycle drew alongside and the pillion rider triggered at least six shots at them, police said.
The car's driver, Sunisa Boonyen, aged 49, was killed. The passenger, Chadaporn Srileng, 52, was wounded and was rushed to Mayo Hospital. Both are natives of Pattani.
Footage from a surveillance camera in the area showed the two attackers on a motorcycle.
Pol Lt Col Noppasit Tem-ongla, deputy chief of Mayo police station, said a check on the registration plate seen on the motorcycle revealed it was reported stolen in Muang district on July 23.
Six spent cartridges from a .45 handgun were found on the road at the scene.
The two killers sped off on the motorcycle along a road to Thung Yang Daeng district.
Security forces were hoping to track them down.
