The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration will open 12 new centres next week where the public can view and obtain CCTV footage of crime or other incidents on city streets which affect them.

The service is currently available only at City Hall, from the closed-circuit security camera management centre near Ratchadamnoen Road, Traffic and Transportation Department deputy chief Suthon Arnakul said.

He said the BMA has installed 53,429 security cameras throughout the capital.

The new centres will provide greater convenience. People will be able to view and get copies of footage from the district offices in Huay Khwang, Ratchathewi, Phra Khanong, Bang Kholaem, Chatuchak, Bang Khen, Min Buri, Bung Kum, Bang Phlat, Bang Bon and Rat Burana.

They had already been set up. The service would begin on Monday. Bangkok governor Aswin Kwanmuang would preside over the opening of the centre at Bang Bon district office.

Mr Suthon said officials would be available around the clock, working in three shifts, at each centre. This meant people could ask to see footage immediately from cameras linked to the centres.

However, there were currently 30,000 stand-alone cameras from which people would have to wait around three days to get required footage.
