NARATHIWAT - A bomb that exploded in Bacho district on Tuesday night is believed to have been intended for security forces due to patrol the road this morning, police said.

The bomb, planted under a coconut tree along the road to Ban Buecho school in tambon Bacho, went off around 8pm, without causing any casualties or disruption.

Police did not respond and rush to the scene in the night, for fear it was an insurgent trap.

A combined team of police, soldiers and bomb disposal experts inspected the scene on Wednesday morning. Pieces of metal and explosive residue were found scattered over the area. The bomb was estimated to have weighed about 7kg.

Police believed the bomb was intended for soldiers who regularly patrol the route and defence volunteers due to pass there on the way to a training field this morning.

For some reason, it detonated prematurely.
