Ranger base attacked in Yala

YALA -- Shots were fired at a ranger base in Bannang Sata district late on Saturday night, leading to a brief exchange of fire with a group of militants. There were no casualties, police said.

The incident occurred at about 10.10pm when a number of militants, using various types of weapons, opened fire on the base, manned by rangers from Ranger Company 3307, on Highway 410 (Yala - Betong) near a branch road to Bang Lang Dam.

The rangers returned fire, with the exchange lasting 10-15 minutes. The attackers then retreated into the darkness.

A team of explosive ordnance disposal personnel was despatched to examine the scene on Sunday morning.  They recovered about 50 spent cartridges from M16 and AK47 rifles near a plot of durian seedlings about 200 metres from the base.

Nobody was hurt in the clash.

The police believed the militants were from an insurgent group led by Masanusi Luebaena operating in Banang Sata district.
