Six wounded in rubber protest shooting

SONGKHLA : Five rubber farmers and one policeman were wounded when a man fired a gun at rubber farmers who had blockaded the main road in protest against falling rubber prices in Rattaphum district yesterday.

Rubber farmers use trucks loaded with latex to block part of the Asian Highway in Songkhla’s Rattaphum district to pressure the government into shoring up rubber prices.

Global latex prices have fallen in line with surplus from Africa and the decline demand from China. The protestors are behaving unreasonably. Thers nothing really much Government can do as Thailand is not a major supplier and can not influence global pricing. Did the same group gave more tax when prices was at its highest last year? Just hope that this unreasonable demonstrators do not have a political agenda.
