Sukumpol: Stop asking about coup

The media should quit asking about the chance of another coup as no one wants to get involved and it would not be easy anyway, new Defence Minister Sukumpol Suwanatat said on Tuesday.

ACM Sukumpol criticised the media after attending a ceremony at the Defence Ministry to bid farewell to Gen Yutthasak Sasiprapa, his predecessor who has been appointed deputy prime minister, and to welcome him into his new portfolio.

The ceremony was also attended by Gen Sathian Permthong-in, the permanent secretary for defence, Gen Thanasak Patimaprakorn, the supreme commander, Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha, the army commander, Adm Surasak Roonroengrom, the navy commander, ACM Itthiporn Suphawong, the air force commander, and other top-ranking military officers.

Discussion 7 geoffo: PTP's popularity has already been reflected by the July 2010 election result. This popularity also applies to Thaksin as his opposers had all along labelled him as the defacto leader of PTP.

geoffo D9 - "Would you like to put his popularity to the test today."
The latest Suan Dusit Poll (Dec 24, 2011) shows YS at record high popularity. According to the last NIDA Poll (Dec 23, 2011), PTP has performed higher than the Dems have ever performed. Unless you think TS paid people to vote in the polls?

TS realized the untapped voting potential of a large group of voters and mobilized them with the oldest card in the pack, The " we will take from others and give it to you as you deserve it strategy"

He also understood how to divide and conquer in a multi party environment.

"Overwhelmingly voted in ". It would be accurate to say he won by a small majority.

Would you like to put his popularity to the test today.

Is it the chicken or the egg? We need the coup because we don't have a mature democracy. With what? 20 coup so far and counting there is never going to be any hope for a true democracy. Folks, we need to learn to tough it out to achieve our ultimate goal. Have a little longer attention span and don't always seek the easy way out. Nobody says it's easy. Sukumpol said it's not easy to have a coup. That's not really true. Rather, it's let's have another coup but now what? Doesn't anybody learn from past experience?

What's the point in asking if there will be a coup? Are generals honest about this kind of thing?

bluebkk D6 - You still don't know why he is overwhelming elected, do you? Did the last 20 coups bring about democracy? No. So what makes you think a 21st will? It's military written constitutions that make democracy in Thailand a joke.

Discussion 5; basically you could be right ..only.. a country run from abroad by a fugitive, convicted, banned from politics billionaire....who on top of that orchestrated a terror campaign to get back into power.... THAT IS NO MATURE DEMOCRACY, but rather a sick and perverted specter of a democracy that has to be overthrown by all possible means!

  • Discussion 5 : 24/01/2012 at 08:14 PM5

In a mature democracy, NO one should want a coup even if the leader is the most corrupt, vile the country has ever as seen it undermines the point of an election/constitution. However, Thailand is NOT a mature democracy and it will never be as people still see coups as the only solution to the problem. This is not just talking about TS but also about the hundred of (attempted)coups Thailand has had.

"Nobody wants to do it. It's not an easy thing to do. Let's not raise this question again. Please stop saying that there is speculation about it," he said.

This is just dancing around the subject. He does not say flat out that "NO" there is no coup planned, only that it is not an easy thing to do.

With all the other statements made by this government it will be only natural to look for a coup as fast as the details are worked out because it is not an easy thing to do.

  • Discussion 3 : 24/01/2012 at 06:52 PM3

No one wants it??? If the actual UDD/PT government keeps thinking and acting as they are above ANY law, many, many people will pray for a coup....

  • Discussion 2 : 24/01/2012 at 02:43 PM2

"Political interference in the military affairs is normal. What is of importance is cooperation," he said.
    And lucrative too I bet.
is this why we have generals that wants to be politicians and politicians that want to be generals.??
