South shooting sparks outrage

Military rangers deny they targetted innocents

The military is backing rangers who shot dead four Muslims and injured four after angry locals claimed innocent people had been targetted.

Muslim men yesterday bury the body of a man who was shot dead by military rangers on Sunday night.

The shooting, in Pattani's Nong Chik district on Sunday night, took place as military rangers were chasing suspected insurgents who attacked the 4302 military ranger base at Ban Namdum in tambon Pulo Puyo in the district around 8.30pm. Nine Muslim men were travelling in a pickup truck when they were stopped by military rangers on highway No.418 near Moo 1 of Ban Kayi in tambon Pulo Puyo and were fired upon by the officers.

We have been pouring billions of Baht into the deep south without any slight success in supressing terrorism. Bombs are continually witnessed and lives are still lost on almost a daily basis. Maybe what we should do is stop the flow of money altogether into the area. Maybe then things could change for the better. What is the purpose of doing the same thing over and over year after year without intended results?

    RE #12
Surely the murder of any innocent people is wrong and that is the BIG PICTURE. Some of the posts on this topic seem unpleasantly racist because only Muslims were killed (shades of George W.)

I also remember the 2 large scale massacres of innocent Muslims when our beloved Takky was PM - and (mis)managing with his usual mix of insensitivity and arrogance which made a bad situation far worse.

RE #1 "Two firearms, an AK-47 and a 11mm pistol, were discovered in the vehicle, Maj Gen Akara said."

We know who discovered them but the real question is who placed them there - while the area was blocked to ambulances and any civilian witnesses. Or maybe the weapons belonged to the 76 year old terrorist!
We see enough (attempted) cover-ups by the US military, do you think the Thai army has higher standards?

This is the heart of the matter. No matter the details of this story (maybe never fully known), look at the BIG Picture, please....

Bangkok has alienated the south giving it no more than a heavy army presence .It would be easy to understand how they feel more Malaysian than Thai given their common religion and geographical position. If you want peace in the south than listen to what the people want their and get them on your side instead of pointing guns at them and patting them down in check points .Aoplogize for Krue Se Mosque and Tak Bai .They actually deserve compensation .Let them police themselves .

The army and the government must launch a full scale investigation. Efforts are out to discredit the army and the government. Those who instigate and incite outrage must be charged.

the problem with the insurgent in the deep south seem not to be able to get it under control. no wonder the US warned its citizen not to travel to Thailand.
the innocents got killed in the vehicle by accident then flamed them afterward as the chief had claimed his version. it is not hard to flame someone while there is no witness at the scene. don't anyone agree?.

I am continuous reader about insurgents in south of Thailand and this problem is going to be serious continuously. This situation is similer to Kashmir in North India because before 20-30 years there was same problem and now every person know the situation happening there along with all major part of India. In this case army must have to be more careful because insurgents will use local people as their shield and attack on army and even on local peoples too, to get their support. It's very difficult task to seprate insurgents and local people, so local must have to support army too, to get peace in South.

I'm OUTRAGED that Muslims keep killing innocent pacifist monks and teachers.

Sounds like a pick up truck with insurgents attacked and escaped with the military stopping
another pick up with men in back. Nervous soldier tightens trigger causing all soldiers to open
fire on innocents. weapons found sound like plants by military for cover up story. Where is the grenade launcher?? When a story gets too complicated or convoluted it is usually made up. With more additions as the story has holes and needs new "facts"
