Yutthasak calls for full probe of South shooting

Four people shot dead by military rangers in Pattani were not insurgents, Deputy Prime Minister Yutthasak Sasiprapa said yesterday.

"From a preliminary investigation, the four dead were not involved with the insurgent group," Gen Yuthasak said. He promised to shed light on the killings in the deep South which have outraged both local residents and human rights activists.

koolbreez D8 : You state there has NEVER been a situation where police or military have planted illegal evidence to protect themselves in justifying the arrest, or harassment??? Never, ever in the whole of Thailand?

And how would you know this? Do all police and military confide in you? Are you clairvoyant?

Those found guilty had to be held accountable, he added.

When is anyone held truly accountable in Thailand, more like inactive post and return to normal once all has died done.

In all police, and military dealing in all of the country, there has never been a situation where those in charge have planted illegal evidence to protect themselves in justifying the arrest, or harrasment. That is one of foreigners biggest fears around the world, the planting of evidence to justify an arrest, yet this is not something that goes on in Thailand from all reports from those involved with the police, or military.

If they did plant the weapons this would be a whole new tactic not seen before, thus I doubt the weapons were planted as some allege.

    A tragedy all around.

    Since 2004 when the insurgency started again we have spent billions of baht in the South with very little to show in the way of progress. It would be good if the govt could determine;

    - who exactly are the "insurgents"?
    - who leads them and what are their goals?
    - then start a dialouge because what has been done so far has solved nothing.

The people want justice not money. They want to feel safe, to go about there daily lives
knowing that either a terrorist or the military will not cause harm.
There was nothing wrong with following the pickup rather than stopping it.
Perhaps the military need training in stop and search tactics.

I think if the "villagers" opened fire at the Rangers first, all bets are off. Unless, we want the Rangers to duck or running away when fired upon, to let the "villagers" slip away. Besides only insurgents, not villagers, carry automatic weapons like AK-47.

No one is to blame but the insergents, they started all this and the south is no different than, afghanistan, iraq, or Vietnam was .....you dont know who the enemy is.

In stark contrast to the rest of the country, the southerners are more interested in justice being served than monetary compensation.
