Family's grief turns to anger

Victim of Pattani shooting told his family to avoid South's conflict

As a state employee hired to provide security for teachers and communities in the restive deep South, Nisee Dueramae never thought the day would come when someone in his family would be branded an "insurgent" by the state authorities.

His father, 55-year-old Isaman, was one of four people killed on Sunday night after paramilitary rangers opened fire on a pickup truck in which they were travelling. One person managed to escape unhurt from the shooting in Pattani's Nong Chik district.
