Ranger killing seen as revenge

Sukumpol voices regret over Sunday's shooting

A volunteer military ranger was gunned down in Pattani's Khok Pho district yesterday while a Buddhist temple was hit by two grenades in Nong Chik district.

The attacks are being seen as revenge for Sunday night's shooting by paramilitary rangers that left four local Muslim men dead and four injured.

Volunteer ranger Thanong Sinthu, 40, was gunned down on the Nakate-Pattani road No.42 near Moo 2 of Ban Khamao yesterday morning.

Being new to Thailand all I see are people breaking the law Be it driving down the wrong side of the road not wearing crash helmets, dumping rubbish, Corruption the list goes on and what is being done to stop this, the answer appears to be nothing. On TV if someone has a disagreement the way it is settled is by giving each other a good hiding or shooting them. The general public are being fed this violence on TV surely it has to stop.Children are impressionable and will try to emulate what they see and hear.I remember not long back a school was being criticised for the violent behaviour of its purples is there any wonder?.Even advertising on the TV we are fed violent behaviour a wife hitting here husband in the paint add and many more.I fear unless this is stopped the only way is down and anarchy will rule.I love the Thai people and Thailand and I fear for it and them.

Khun Bill #6, Deep Southern Thailand once had a highly effective Military-Police-Civilian Intel Agency, which had been able to keep peace in the region for decades, until the newly elected PM Thaksin Shinnawattra abolished it. The former PM claimed that the Police alone could do the job, which would save money in the long run. The problem is the civilians didn't thrust the Police as much as the Military. Intel soon dried up and the region soon became infested with insurgents, and the rest is history. This is, without any doubt, the worst legacy left behind by Thaksin.

These are not freedom fighters nor are the revolutionaries trying to make the South a better place to live or having democracy in their mind. These are groups involved in cross boarder crime activities as weapon, drugs and human trafficking. They use Islam as their excuse and brainwashed youths to carry out the attacks; and high-up people (incl. Government officials) are involved who benefit from this situation.

Pull the military out. Have a force made up of people from both sides muslim etc, the leadership from both sides also. let them then sort out and work together as one to make the area as peacfull as possible.

This would happen. I also think that everyone knew it would also. Its sad fro the soldier and family. my condolences. But when in such an area, a person should always change routes to get to work everyday when working for the military, or they should live on the base at all times when on active duty. There is no answer to this problem except arbitration, all sides sit down and talk untill a compromise, working solution hs been made. During such time a ceasefire observed. But Then look at the Uk and the IRA. Nearly the same situation.Even now there are still bombs etc not not as much. What should happen here also is have a force made up of both sides to keep the peace. the leadership of such force also made up of people from both sides. The military pulled out. Then see what happens.

The fact is that terrorists can be well hidden among civilians, their existence may last extra longer. So civilized communities need to clearly define how those unholy are supported to do such hideous things. The root cause is their wrongly inspired "US & THEM" concept which effectively generates hatred towards others. It is lifetime problem to deal with.

My condolence to all victims, It makes me sick and sad but rather than stuffing more army it’s about time for the real decisions makers to look for south issues from other serious prospective than saving face as this killing cycle seems endless, both sides have strong feelings about why they are right and the other side is wrong, every side usually has a reason to feel the way they do. No one is right and everyone is right.

I encourage the government to step into the shoes of the people in the south, look into their problems, listen and talk with them and understand it from them directly, please pull the blankets from over your face and see their world as it is, people were all force fed reasons for war and now hopefully they can learn from it, we all need to keep in mind that there is no "good", and that there is no "evil", we are all equally demented and need to understand each other. Please have some empathy.
