A former village defence volunteer was shot dead in Sungai Kolok district of Narathiwat province on Monday morning.
Police said Ruplee Asi, 33, a motorcycle taxi driver and former village defence volunteer, was killed after leaving his home in tambon Pasemas on a motorcycle.
About 500 metres down the road Ruplee stopped his motorcyle to remove a big block of wood lying across the road. A man walked out of the bush and fired two shots into his head with a .357 pistol, killing him instantly, before fleeing on a motorcycle.
