Prayuth denies failing to curb insurgency

The army chief has hit back at claims the army is doing little to solve the insurgency problem in the deep South.

Army Commander Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha said yesterday he was confident the army is tackling the crisis in the right way.

He appeared upset with criticisms of the state's attempts to solve the southern unrest.

ggh D3 - Agree, armchair critics are not helpful at all. Like the General said, the army are doing their best in this very difficult situation where innocent people are being killed on a daily basis and often in a most cowardly and gruesome way. Nobody is immune from these terrorist attacks, even monks and school teachers.

It just shows the mentality of the enemy.

HILL D10: "Obama tried that and it does not work with serious, dedicated, committed fundamentalist who blow things up and kill people."

You mean like Timothy MacVeigh, infamous right wing terrorist extremist who blew up a building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 people and wounding over 800?

And what is heroic about attacking a mosque with unarmed people inside, or beating and then stacking unarmed student demonstrators into trucks like chickens and having 90 suffocate before they reach their destination?

Both sides are to blame in the south. Mother Teresa was maybe a hero. Ghandi. Martin Luther King. Individuals can be heroes under particular circumstances but assigning hero status in your way is purely political and possible Islamophobic.

meme D12 - If you plot the deaths per month, you'll see that the violence has remained relatively steady for the last 7 years. The generals in charge haven't changed much in that time, either.

If the General stands behinds his statements, please ask him what success he has to show for the huge amount of budget that has been spent the past 7 years in the south. Expenditures do not lie. There is absolutely no success to show for all the money spent in that region each year. People are still being killed daily. Success is not defined as areas where the Army can go but by how many innocent peoples lives are saved each day. Right now no one is safe.

Dis #14, ain't you going overboard to patronize the military? Helping the citizens during the flood is their duty during peace time. I will applaud their efforts though much the same as I applaud the NGOs, volunteers etc. The military is tasked with the quelling the southern unrest and that it's escalating meant that they failed as much as the governments have failed and that include the present.

hillfarang, discussion 13, if you sincerely believe that the "Army soldiers who serve the country in the South ARE the True Heroes", please explain why and give one example of something positive the army has achieved in the South - or elsewhere, for that matter.

If we can't criticise the military for it's ongoing failure to maintain the peace and order and the security of the State, we shouldn't credit it for giving a helping hand during the floods.

Can we criticise it for anything at all?!

Gen Prayuth is spot on again. Unfortunately the violence is escalating with the fugitive back in power.

Yes, but Obama tried that and it does not work with serious, dedicated, committed fundamentalist who blow things up and kill people.

Look at Iran, Syria, Egypt, etc.
