Prayuth denies failing to curb insurgency

The army chief has hit back at claims the army is doing little to solve the insurgency problem in the deep South.

Army Commander Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha said yesterday he was confident the army is tackling the crisis in the right way.

He appeared upset with criticisms of the state's attempts to solve the southern unrest.

Yes, but Obama tried that and it does not work with serious, dedicated, committed fundamentalist who blow things up and kill people.

Look at Iran, Syria, Egypt, etc.

the army is never to blame for anything. they always have the interest of the 'nation' at heart, whatever that is. perhaps army generals and military officials in general should concentrate on being professional, stop trying and being unofficial politicians in uniform, stop using force to intimidate people, get out of businesses. that might be a good start.

1 percent? Probably true. 0.5% the terrorists/insurgents (depending on POV) and 0.5% the military.

He says it's not the Army's fault, yet he will not order the investigation, and prosecution of those soldiers that have extra-juditiously killed in the Southern unrest. He seems to justify the Tak Bai killings.

1% of all the people in those regions is allot of people. If there are conservatively 1 million people in that area, that puts the insurgents at 10,000. That is a big armed resistance, and not just a few disgruntled people.

The Army should get off its high horse, and give the Southerners what they demand, prosecution of ALL those responsible for the extra-judicial deaths by the Army.

Not only the army is doing little to solve problems in the South, but they also make it a lot worse. It's like spreading gasoline on a fire. The solution will never be a military one. It's about respect and mutual understanding. Thailand must show its ability to treat minorities in a fair and equal way. Quite the opposite the army is doing right now.

'Only one percent'. Can you imagine if it's ten or twenty percent or more?

Dream on Gen P. His strategies sure look like failures from here.

His troops fight a 9 to 5 war limited whereas the baddies don't.

50 years ago the Malaysians and British used a strategy of denial to defeat communist insurgents

Have you not wondered why there is no trouble in Malaysia today.

Suggest those criticle of the Military operation in the South, voluntarily enlist in the Army to assist with the opperation. In times of crisis, troops look for reassuring support from their countrymen, not criticism!

Agree, and that 1% should be treated the same way they treat the teachers, policemen and monks in the south. Please remember they have beheaded monks and they will do it again. The way you win them over is by stopping them permanently.

It's definitely not as easy to curb an armed insurgency as it is to curb a protest. Insurgents always shoot back, General P.
