Abhisit warns South conflict is escalating

Compensation scheme 'may make things worse'

Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva has warned of an escalation in the southern insurgency if the government does not follow through with its promise to compensate victims of the violence.

Mr Abhisit said yesterday that while a government-appointed committee has agreed to pay up to 7.5 million baht in compensation for each case of death in the far South during the past eight years, the cabinet has not made a resolution on the issue yet.

He added that any inconsistency will create confusion.

The DEM may just fall into their own traps.

bula D17-That might be your dream but not Thaksin's. Chalerm doesn't even think a trip down south is worth the petrol in his car.

Why don't you say the only reason was because PT government is preparing to reduce DEM's majority in the South?

Insurgency attacks and killings, etc. go on all the time. Every day there is violence. The previous government tolerated it and did very little. The current government needs to step up and do something to stop the violence. Most of us are just people who want to live good lives in peace.

The only reason payment for the south is even on table is so PT can justify giving millions of taxpayers money to people who already received money from Thaksin to go to Ratchprasong . The south is a legitimate cause .Thaksin isnt .

Disc 8- If you remember Suthep promised peace in the south in 6 months under the Democrats. That was of course a year and a half ago.

The sad thing is that there has been a large escallation of violence in the south since the PTP governmemt assumed power.

Statements like those from Chalerm about it being a waste of time and money going to the south are not helpful. They will further disenfranchise the 3.5 southern states.

AV might be right on this one...

I read that the Dems were against paying this money? If the government goes ahead with it the Dems will fight it. Which is it?

Why is the trouble escalating in the south? In my opinion its about 90% to do with drugs. The other 10% is a combination of aspects.
Plant a bomb here and there, drugs go through unhindered. Diversion tactics. Pay some poor soul to take drugs from point A to point B, then inform the police about these people while a larger shipment of drugs is transported through without any problems.
If compensation is paid it should be paid to the soldiers, police etc families and the innocent people caught up in the violence. Or just pull the military out. But then the country will be over run with drugs.
