Tourism sector worried by terror threat

The private sector has called on the government to explain the bomb explosions in central Bangkok yesterday to the foreign media, warning that the tourism industry could be heavily impacted.

Ittipan Khaolamai, head of the Ayutthaya tourism association's public relations service, said on Wednesday that news of the three bomb explosions in the Sukhumvit road area yesterday afternoon had spread throughout the world.

European countries had again warned their citizens of possible terrorist attacks in Thailand, he said. This would  have a severe impact on tourism

"The government must quickly explain the situation to the foreign media because if the government is slow with its response, even for a day, it could be too late to get foreign tourists back here," Mr Ittipan said.

In Ubon Ratchathani, police beefed up security measures to head off any possible attacks.

mastervix: There's another possible solution in the same vein as yours: since Israelies are the target, why not ban them from entering Thailand? See how racism and stupidity are so flexible?

There has been worse 'domestic' trouble here in recent years ... remember? The current 'economic problems' around the world, may be far more important to watch.

"Preparations have been made and if there's a violent incident, a forensic team will be brought in immediately," said Pol Maj Gen Surapol. Sounds very efficient, if some innocent Thai or Tourist has been killed or badly injured. Should the preparations be, trying to avoid these violent incidents? This guy has already said "if", which won't go down well with his bosses, who say "its all under control and there will be no problems".

This has already been addressed by the Minister of Tourism and Sports who, once again has announced, that there will be no impact on tourism. There you go. Problem solved.

And still no one thanks the taxi driver for not picking up the one terrorist, and effectively stopping him from reaching whatever his intended target would have been.

Too many people are acting the hero, when it is that taxi driver that should really be thanked, and commended.

Who knows what the damage would have been if that driver was indifferent, and took the terrorist where he wanted to go.

One taxi driver saved who knows how many lives, but he is forgotten with others taking credit for his heroics. That is the discrace in all of this.

Tourism Sector .....you better start worrying. Doesnt matter who they are targeting the fact is they are here and they are acting out terrorism.

Think it's time to relocate to another country.

Sorry again doomsayers here....this is still a non event ... and will have no impact at tourism or anything else. Thailand is still the best place to stay in this part of the world and that is not going to change anytime soon.

It's nice to know a forensic team is on standby for a violent incident, maybe a rapid responce team to arrest terrorists would be a better move, or maybe just ban muslims from entering thailand :)

Not necessary for the government to explain anything. The truth is already out there for the world to see.

WOW, The bombs that went off have already heavily hit tourism. I don't think so. But also with headlines such as Bomb blasts rock bangkok. The people in the media are responsible for a lot of problems, due to miss-information and bad headlines. The bbc states small bombs. These type of people have no right to work in the media, as the make the situation far worse.
What should be conducted now is an investigation into the network here of people from iran.
