Altogether 39 people were killed and 69 wounded in violent incidents which occurred in the three southern border provinces in the month of February, the Deep South Watch group at the Prince of Songkla University Pattani campus reported.

DSW said there were 74 violent incidents - nine explosions, 42 shootings, 16 cases of arson, and seven other minor ones - during Feb 1-29, causing 39 deaths and 69 injuries.

Pol Maj-Gen Peera Boonliang, the Yala police chief, said that following yesterday's arson attacks in Pattani province he had ordered police units to step up intelligence operations as a preventive measure.
