Soldier, civilian hurt by South bomb

One soldier and a villager were wounded by a bomb explosion in Narathiwat’s Sukirin district on Thursday morning, said Pol Col Jongjairak Kongpao, chief of Sukirin police station.

Sgt Maj Worawit Inta, chief of the special unit providing security for teachers in Sukirin, told police that about 7.50am, he sent 12 soldiers out to provide protection for local teachers as usual.

While the soldiers, on motorcycles and a pickup truck, were travelling on a local road at Ban Igabu in tambon Sukirin of Sukirin district, a bomb buried in the middle of the road went off, seriously injuring Pvt Wuthichai Chamruang, 21, and slightly wounding a woman who was passing by, Pathom Thammasaro.

The bomb victims were taken to Sukirin hospital.

The explosion left a 90cms deep and 2.10-metre wide hole. Police found an electrical wire ru nning from the hole to roadside forest. They said the home-made bomb was detonated by battery.

They blamed separatist militants.
