DSI alleges GT200 deceit

The Department of Special Investigation claims the manufacturer of the controversial GT200 and Alpha 6 bomb detectors intentionally deceived Thailand to sell its devices.

DSI chief Tarit Pengdith said the DSI's findings showed the manufacturer had set out to lure potential buyers into buying its devices from the beginning.

It came as no surprise that Thailand fell victim to the manufacturer as 20 other countries, including Britain, had also been deceived, he said at a press conference.

Mr Tarit announced the DSI's findings yesterday after a meeting with 13 state agencies that purchased the bomb detectors. The devices were found to be ineffective in detecting explosives.

The agencies discussed the possibility of taking legal action against the manufacturer and sellers of the devices for fraud.

The state agencies would discuss the matter further at another meeting with the DSI on Aug 24.
