Abhisit, Mahathir address problems in the South

HAT YAI, Songkhla - The escalating extremism and violence in the deep South of Thailand should not be allowed to disrupt efforts to find a solution to the problem, former prime ministers Abhisit Vejjajiva and Mahathir Mohammad agreed at the International Conference on Political Science, Public Administration and Peace Studies in Asean Countries on Friday.

Everybody seems to forget that the current round of escalating violence in the Deep South was caused by former PM TS' grossly misguided and failed policy of replacing the highly effective Independent Intel Agency with fear and intimidation. His aim was to impose the culture and religion of the majority upon the Muslim minority. Subsequent constituting a particular religion as the only state religion only confirms their suspicion of former PM TS' ultimate goal of imposing a new religion on them. Now, what we have in the Deep South is full-blown Jihad, aka, Muslims' religious war, initially, in order to defend their Islamic way of life. But now, it has grown toward reestablishing of their long lost Islamic kingdom of Patani Raya. All these are made possible by former PM TS, and no one else.

Amazing! The PM visited the South yesterday but it was hard to find a report of it in this paper, who she met what was said, today Abhisit attends some talkfest and its a big story. Amazing!

It is always nice to read how someone can blame the former PM Abhisit for everything in Thailand. But then what did the other previous gov. Thaksin,Samak,Somchai achieve in the South ???

The four southern provinces have been traded like livestock since the past century by the various warlords, British and previous Siamese governments, along with Malaysia northern states. The difference is simply our states assimilated due to inclusive federal policies but the Siamese situation was more complex due to cultural and religious reasons. As with any situation where people have differing opinions and ideas about how things are run, some type of compromise by the leaders and the people themselves is needed. I think this is asking too much of the current players. No imminent solutions, sorry gentlemen.

"Yingluck's governement still lacks clarity and commitment in finding a solution in its southern policy" May I remind you Mr Abhisit neither did your administration!!!!!!
