Rubber growers reel under attacks

Rubber planters in Narathiwat province are crying for help after many tappers were badly wounded, and some lost legs, by bombs planted in their plantations.

Bido Jenu, 45, the owner of a rubber plantation near Ban Lubo Diyae in tambon Tanyong Limo of Rangae district of Narathiwat, said many tappers fear for their safety and do not dare come out to work after one bomb after has  exploded at several plantations since Aug 31.

The attacks were intended to scare workers away from the plantations, asnd they could not earn a living, she said. This had also affected the owners of the rubber plantations and rubber planters, she said.

Mrs Bido was one of the villagers who went to a rubber plantation at Ban Pa Phai in tambon Tanyong Limo this morning to see for herself after three Thai national flags, which had been partly burned, were found to have been placed over three piles of earth, each about five metres apart, at the base of rubber trees.

Villagers who found the flags reported to police for fear a bomb might have been hidden under them.

Police went to the scene and removed the flags. There was nothing hidden under them.
