Pongthep to meet South teachers

Representatives of teachers from the three southern border provinces will call on Education Minister Pongthep Thepkanchana at the ministry on Nov 30 to voice their grievances.

Mr Pongthep, who is also deputy prime minister, announced the meeting on Tuesday when asked to comment on the decision by the Confederation of Teachers of Southern Border Provinces to temporarily close all 332 government-run schools in Pattani to pressure the authorities to review security measures and ensure their safety.

The confederation's decision came at a meeting yesterday after the female director of a school in Pattani's Nong Chik district was shot dead in her car by militants on Nov 22.
