Ex-asst village chief slain in Pattani

A former village headman was killed and a territorial defence volunteer wounded in a drive-by shooting in Pattani’s Yaring district on Wednesday afternoon, said Pol Col Mana Nakthang, chief of Yaring police station.

The dead man was identified as Suwan Kaewsrinaw, former assistant chief of Ban Khlong Tam of Pattani’s Panare district.

The wounded man is Ong-art Inthakan, a defence volunteer of Panare district. He was admitted to Pattani hospital.

Witnesses told police the victims were travelling on a motorcycle on a rural road at Ban Jarang of Yaring district when gunmen on two other motorcycles fired on them with 11mm pistols. The assailants then fled.

Mr Suwan took bullets in his torso and died on the spot.

Police blamed separatist militants.

More than 5,000 people have been killed and over 9,000 hurt in more than 11,000 incidents, or about 3.5 a day, in the three southernmost provinces and the four districts of Songkhla since the violence erupted afresh in January 2004, according to Deep South Watch.
