Chalerm: No terrorism in Thailand

There is no terrorism in Thailand, just political demonstrations and the insurgency in the deep South, Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung said on Thursday.

Mr Chalerm was commenting on the report of the Australian Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) that ranked Thailand eighth in a global list of 158 countries where terrorism has had the most impact in the past decade. The index takes into account the number of terrorist incidents, fatalities, injuries and damage.

Dis#15, you are entitle to your opinion but I feel he made that terrorist call tojustify his heavy hand approach and totally disproportionate use of force. I believed Ahbisit made a bad judgement call and a wrong decision, properly due to poor advise or even pressure and is coming back to haunt him now.

D14 : Your comment is a perfect example of what kind of leaders we DON'T want. Abhisit told the truth despite the possible negative impacts this could have. I commend him for doing so.

Would any leader admit there are terrorists in the country? Any sensible leader will obviously denied it as it has serious implications to our image and investors confidence. That's why I can't understand why Ahbisit seem so proud to admit we have terrorists. That's like shooting himself on the foot and he is the PM.

Someone tell Chalerm, in educated countries with educated people, there is no misunderstanding what burning down schools and killing innocent teachers/citizens every is classified as; TERRORISM. With Chalerm's attitude, no wonder nothing is ever accomplished in the south. Are all these commenter's on BP wrong and Chalerm is right? No way. Chalerm is lost, he is over his head trying to protect TS and pillaging budgets, to care about schools burning down and innocent Thai's being killed. This is Terrorism and if it was happening in Bangkok you can bet Chalerm would do something about it.

The word "terrorism" means "violent or the threat of violence, especially, bombing, kidnapping, and assassination, carried out for political purpose." So, "If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck." Now, apply this Duck Test to what is going on in the Deep South, Deputy PM Chalerm, will you?

So insurgents waging war against police, military, teachers, and citizens are not consider as terrorist? What planet does Chalerm live on? Maybe he should look up the definition of terrorist.

I respect Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung, but It's shocking to hear this coming from a Thai Government official. Of course there's "terrorism" in Thailand. If that's not "terrorism," in the deep south being caused by Muslim radicals, what is it? Anytime you murder people and show no remorse, it's defenitely, "terrorism."
