B66m for armoured vehicles approved

The cabinet on Tuesday approved a request by the Royal Thai Police Office for 66 million baht from the central fund to buy 33 one-tonne armoured double-cab vehicles for use in the deep South, government spokesman Tossaporn Serirak said.

Of the total, 27 would replace old vehicles which had been in use for more than eight years and six would replace those damaged in field...

And of course we always have the question of why we would ask these young men to sit in the open bed of the pick-up, armored or not. Even if by some miracle the interior passengers survived the initial blast the personnel in the back would most certainly be thrown from the vehicle and either killed or seriously injured.

Hopefully these armoured vehicles perform and work better than the airship !!!

I think having these is better than the normal unarmored pick up. At least it shields the police and soldiers from hand held fire and they can give chase. Even if it was an IED, they have a higher chance of survival and than not doing anything at in fear of being blown up. These will be better purchases than the Army's toys, or the useless police dummies at street intersections.

geoffo # 7 and # 4. I once was at a exhibition in Muang Thong Thani where all kinds of military hardware was shown. I am convinced it is the locally build Toyota pick up manufactured by ThaiRung, the MUV4. Better than nothing, but it is a poor man's Hummer I my eyes. Indeed, a serious bomb will make it fly.

Like D4 says these will be double cab utes with Kevlar panels in doors and floors like the Ford units modified in Laem Chabang and supplied to overseas military and police for quite a few years now.

Better than nothing but the bombs used down South will still take these out unfortunately.

Most casualties seem to happen when police and soldiers charge blindly to an incident. Modern tactics learning from the forces in Afghanistan for example might be more beneficial.

I agree with fitabkk they need to spend a lot more than this to withstand a hit from underneath and that seems to be where the main problem is coming from.

How about doing something to boost the morale of the teachers and civiians being killed every day. perhaps each civilian should be given an armoured car...

66m baht divided by 33 = 2m baht each or about 65,000 US per vehicle. As most of the deaths and injuries are caused by IEDs it is imperative these vehicles be armored underneath. Based on the skimpy description I would say these are double cab pick up trucks, the vehicle of choice for the army, and not actual armored personnel carriers or military vehicles. I would love to see the specifications (Thank you D3)for these life saving and morale boosting vehicles before I go out on a limb by saying this actually makes sense.

I hope this is good news.
Let's see some specs, costs and ensure they really arrive.
(of course, imagine the good 400 BILLION baht could have done if it weren't lost in the Rice Pledging Scam)

Long overdue for this purchase to aid the end of needless loss of life due to inadequate equipment for a terrorist conflict.
