Militants now targeting officials and teachers

A search and kill hunt for Buddhist officials in Narathiwat province on Thursday has sparked fears that insurgents are shifting their target from teachers to government officials.

Seven armed men stormed into the Bacho Tambon Administration Organisation (TAO) office around noon on Thursday and burned it down after failing to find any Buddhist employees to kill.

Abdulwaha Dulayapinij, the office chief, told the police he and seven other employees were just leaving for lunch.

I'm of the humble opinion that as long as Thaksin (the brother) is so dependant on goodwill of a rich MUSLIM Gulf emirate for his assylum (to escape imprisonment back home?) then there is NOT much political leaders or the army or the police or whatever Thai security authorities can do to counter the killings and bombings perpetrated by SEPARATIST insurgents in south Thailand. That's because the moment a separatist militant is killed in an exchange of fire with Thai security personnel the OIC (Organisation of Islamic countries) or the Arab League will bring this matter up to the UN to condemn Thailand. Getting Israel to help is logical step.

“Militants now Targeting Officials”. I’m waiting for a headline that reads, “Militants Now Being (Successfully) Targeted by (Security) Officials”. There seems to be little deterrent to stop the militants from doing whatever they please. If only the self-appointed head of Thai National security didn’t have to jet off to India or if the Chalerm would actually do something!

Dis#4 djjp. May be BP is partially sold or being threated so it has to soften the comments that come from the readers. Many of my comments were not posted either. Regarding having teachers stay in official residence is not practical. They have family. unless school has provide the flats like many police's family has so the whole family can be together. By the way some of those police flats are very much like slums.

The problem in the south is deep rooted since the Anglo-Siamese Treaty of 1909. The northern Malay states were split and the Northern four were given to Siam by Britain without any input from the Malay people. These states were given by the British to Siam as a piece offering and to counter the French. It's similar to the Temple issue with Cambodia but with the people demanding autonomy or a return to Malaysia. Military intervention has not worked and has actually made it worse. Something has to be done but there is more than one group active so negotiations always fail.

Plaese stop asking for Israel to help. Any educated observer would see that they have in no way solved their problem, and therefore we would not want their approach here. More importantly, any informed party would understand the escalation risk in engaging these people locally and the unexpected consequences this would bring. If we want to learn from similar cases look to N Ireland or ETA please.

Is our army train for ceremonies, road blocks or they are trained for taking down terrorists? If they are not able to deal with the southern Muslim trouble makers, I would suggest the government probably can consider to tender this job to countries, which are experts in this field. Our pick would be Israel army. They are the best against such insurgency. Withdraw all police and soldiers from these 3 provinces and let the Israel army to handle it.

Any other government in the world would get there assets in place and begin to deture the violence. Letting their citizens be slaughtered for this amount of time is shameful. The past PM's do nothing, it certainly makes the thai system appear inept and impotent. Doesn't anyone care?

Why doesn't the Thai military do something about all this killing in the South. Watching the news all I see the Thai officals doing is picking up the bodies. Is this military scared to fight for their country and their people. I'm starting to think they don't care or they are scared to fight. Amazing Thailand. Any other country would have sent in their military long ago.

I think Spiceman suggested it first, they really need to get help, most likely from from Israel on how to handle this, is it Thai arrogance that makes bringing in outside experts unthinkable? This is getting absurd.
