Two cleaners shot dead in ambush

A couple were shot dead in Narathiwat's Sungai Padi district yesterday.

Danai Pudpong, 45, a cleaner at Tordeng School and his wife Supawadee Pudpong, 36, a cleaner at a local hospital, were found dead in pools of blood on a road in Aibatu village of Sungai Padi district when police arrived at the scene yesterday evening.

Found near the bodies were three spent bullets.

According to a police investigation, Danai and his wife were on a motorcycle on their way home when an unknown number of attackers ambushed them from the roadside, firing shots at them about 5.32pm. The attackers fled with Danai's gun and his motorcycle.

Meanwhile, police say a man caught on closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage shooting at a car in Muang district of Narathiwat is probably also responsible for shooting at another 10 vehicles in the same district early yesterday.

The suspect, aged around 25-30, wearing a dark green uniform similar to a bomb disposal officer, was seen on CCTV footage near the entrance of the government administration centre in Narathiwat.

The footage showed the lone attacker, also wearing black combat boots, firing shots from a pistol held in his left hand at a car parked in front of a house near the administrative centre.

The car was among 11 vehicles damaged in shooting attacks on five roads in Muang district yesterday. No one was injured.

The damaged vehicles, including cars and pickup trucks, belonged to residents and police.

Narathiwat governor Apinan Suethanuwong believed the shootings might have been carried out by a wayward teenager rather than an insurgent. Police were hunting down the suspect based on what they could see in the footage.

In Pattani, four CCTV cameras were set ablaze at four spots in Mayo district late on Monday night. Earlier on Monday, 17 CCTV cameras were also set on fire and seven others stolen in three districts of Pattani.
