A territorial defence volunteer was killed and his colleague seriously injured in an ambush in Pattani’s Yarang district early Saturday morning, police said.

Pol Lt Jirawat Thongtha, an investigator at Yarang police station, said the attack occurred on the local road in Ban Ton Phai, tambon Moh Wawee of Yarang.

The victim was identified as Sulhiblee Ta-yeh, 28, a territorial defence volunteer of Yala’s Muang district.

Witnesses told police that the victim and his colleague, Ibrorhim Salae, 30, were travelling on a pickup truck heading to their homes in Yala on the local road when gunmen hiding in roadside rubber forest fired on them with assault rifles. The attackers then fled.
