16 die in attack on Thai marine base

Scores of heavily armed gunmen stormed a military base in the southern border province of Narathiwat on Wednesday morning, an army spokesman said, in a major assault that left at least 16 militants dead.

"About 80 fully armed militants stormed the base, where there were 60 marines," said Col Pramote Promin, spokesman for the 4th Region Forward Command of the Internal Security Operations Command.

"The let them in the base but didn't seal off the exit? I am no military man but come on!!" - Look up "perimeter".

First 100 militants, then 80, then 60. Now one network says 50. How many really?

Here's an idea.. take note army generals.. always best t have more marines than militants - it's just basic common sense

Lets hope that they aren't sitting back patting each other on the back, but, hopefully the commanders are pouring troops in and locking down the area and get every last one of them.

There requires a swift counter offensive by the Thai military against know extremists and insurgent locations. A slow response by the Thai government will be nothing short than a sign of weakness.

This is excellent news. Attacks with near impunity and minimal losses on the side of the insurgents were becoming difficult to read.
Nice to hear their numbers have been thinned, and more importantly that they can expect to be resisted a little more

Knew they were coming were able to kill 16,17,18 not sure how many but were not able to catch any alive?
WHat kind of marine operation was that?
The let them in the base but didn't seal off the exit? I am no military man but come on!!

Considering how little is known (or acknowledged) about the motives of the "militants", this story raises a lot of questions. Doesn't the intel that made authorities aware of Maroso who was a "key local leader" include something about his background and acquaintances?

Were any of the attackers taken alive and are they now being questioned, or did all those who weren't killed, escape? What do the defectors have to say?

Can they identify the dead and question their families?

Surely the recovered weapons will provide some clues?

Almost 10 years and nobody can bring it to an end.
    Hard to believe.
