Arsonists set fire to Ban Buere School in tambon Bare Tai in Bacho district of Narathiwat overnight, but the fire was quickly put out by a village security team, reports said on Wednesday.
Three or four armed men were reported to have arrived at the school. They fired shots into the air, causing the two guards at the school to flee for their lives.
They then set fire to the buildings.
However, the fire was quickly put out by a village security team led by the village chief. The fire caused only slight damage to the school.
The school is about one kilometre from the marine base which was attacked by insurgents early on Wednesday.
