Death zone awaited unsuspecting raiders

A group of 50 militants approached a marine base in Narathiwat's Bacho district early Wednesday to launch a surprise attack, unaware that they were entering a death zone.

Narathiwat Task Force 32 knew in advance of the planned attack on their base. Fifty marines led by Cdr Thammanoon Wanna, the task force commander, were poised for action.

"My men and I waited for days.

With advance warning only 16 enemy killed! The ambush did not seem well executed to me, how did it deteriorate into a fire fight?

Yes let's bulldoze all the families homes like in Israel. As we know Israel now lives in peace with all it's neighbours.

Rating for the Thai military on this operation should be outstanding. I wonder if anyone will give credit to whoever started the rumor that there was going to be a terrorist attack in Northern Thailand. It may well have fooled the terrorists to think focus was currently away from the South. Stategy right out of Sun Tzu, "All war is deception".

Dharma 1902 over 100 years ago. From your comments if the raid had been successful you would now be full of praise for these terrorists? Killing is not the answer but these terrorists were out to kill, so unfortunately one has to respond. In 1902, the Brits drew the line so perhaps they should be fighting the Brits. Its a silly argument. Productive is sit down, negotiate, find a solution.

Asa I have repeatedly posted, military intelligence (map & keep it a secret) is the key.

No, I do not applaud death & carnage, but sympathizers who go back over 100 years to say that this was then not Thailand are on the wrong track. There is simply no justification for armed insurrection like this and Thailand's not "giving anything back." Get used to it...

Disc 3, MarkGM1957. I think that the people are not supporting out of devotion. They are keeping quiet out of fear.
If the insurgent can kill Monks and teachers, I don't think they would fall short of killing their own who had uncovered them.

Disc 9, dharma: In a lot of cases and in my opinion (Infantry by the way) it takes violence to put down violence. In fact Disc 6, is correct. You can't be a nice guy and allow an insurgency to expand. Insurgents are hard-core, well-trained thugs who have one goal and that is, "to kill and to take over." Past history, or how someome else accompolishe the mission, has no reflection on this insurgency in the deep-south. Every military operation is diffenrt. Modern military tactics and modern military technology, will defeat the insurgency. The best advice I could ever give anyone is, "Be ready and be prepared for the battle 24/7."

I don't support the killing. But the gung-ho idiots calling to lock up families and to bulldoze homes need to realize how counter-productive this would be. Pattani was an independent kingdom until 1902. Rightly or wrongly, many Pattani people see the Thai military as occupiers. While the killing of innocents by insurgents is indefensible, it's easily forgotten that local Malays have suffered numerous massacres (Tak Bai, Krue Sae) at the hands of the military, all unpunished. So, some balance please. This latest 'victory' is being used as propaganda for the Thai-speaking media. Rest assured, the Malay-language media will have a different spin.

I'm just happy the Thai-Marines, Seals and Recon were ready and waiting. As I have said many times, the Thai-Military is an outstanding fighting force that performed above and beyond the call of duty at places such as Bearcat/Long Khan Province, Vietnam. Now's the time to take the offensive and stop the insurgency. Being prepared/ready and trained for the mission, is the name of the game.

Khun Victor #11, so, how did they get their weapons? Well, mostly by raiding an Army weapon depot near them. Their last "shopping trip" has been only a few months ago, just like what their yesterday's "shopping trip" might turnout to be in their favor, if our Marines had not been tipped off and were ready to "receive" them in such a spectacular fashion.
