Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung, who oversees security affairs in the deep South, said on Monday he had been "forced" by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to finally make a visit to the southernmost provinces.

During the world wars, officers who did not fall into line, or did not come up to the expectations of there superiors, were sent to the front line as punishment. Most did not want to go because of the obvious. Many did not return.
