Yingluck denied speculation that the cabinet would discuss appointing former prime minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh as deputy prime minister for security affairs.
However, she said the government is open to opinions from Gen Chavalit, who is well-versed in problems relating to the three southern border provinces.
Chavalit is 80, has not been in active service since 1990 and she wants his advice?
There are a lot of hits for Chavalit including and interesting one in Wikipedia.
He was also the PM at the time of the 1997 financial crash.

I do not know if she can have any success here, but for all her faults, at least she is making some effort to try to solve the problem. Many have failed before her, so all we can do is be cautiously optimistic. As there are so many factions in that area to deal with I fear that any success with one will cause an even bigger rift with the others. To take a position that one part wants causes a violent reaction in others. And there is the problem in dealing with militants like this as they have no central leadership that they "all" follow.

Victor, I thought the same, why is Chalerm not going? Perhaps YS is afraid he'll embarrass her? The second thought was why is YS not actually going to the South of Thailand while she's in the area?

One major talks with the Malaysian is about the security problems in the deep south but the man in charge is not in the PM group, very strange indeed.
