Senator: Who is Hassan Taib?

Two senators on Friday expressed concern that the peace talks agreement signed between the National Security Council (NSC) and the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) could allow the BRN to take the issue of southern unrest to the international community.

Anusart Suwanmongkol, an appointed senator, said the agreement would give the BRN legitimacy and strengthen its bargaining power.

The agreement was signed on Thursday in Kuala Lumpur by NSC secretary general Lt Gen Paradorn Pattanathabutr and Hassan Taib, identified as the "chief of the BRN liaison office in Malaysia".

No need to look for the conservative stances of appointed senators.

    - "Two senators on Friday expressed concern that the peace talks agreement.....could allow the BRN to take the issue of southern unrest to the international community."

This is one of Thailand's main problems. It wants to belong to the international community, sign agreements and get advantage from being a part of that community but not accept the rulings.

If Thailand has nothing to hide, it should have nothing to fear.

i suggest the senators state what it is they fear could happen should the case be brought to the UN.

Who are these appointed senators? They should have supported this initiative and exploit it to further leading to wider peace negotiation. What is the solution from these appointed senators?

Pete #1 It's a legitimate question. The senator wants the government to explain to the people who he is and why they are dealing with him. Not everyone has your internet access to the BBC archives. This is Thailand. 271 posts and you haven't figured that out yet?

Maybe this is a question for the one in Dubai. He seems to be running the government anyhow.

Has Senator Anusart Suwanmongkol got a void between his ears. A meeting endorsed by the Thai PM and Malaysian PM to sign a peace agreement and the senator doesn’t know who Hassan Taib is. The BBC says this about him “Hassan Taib, from an older generation of campaigners who largely abandoned their armed struggle against the Thai state in the 1990s”. It’s not a lot but a concerned Senator would have done his homework and come up with more. The Senator needs educating.
