BRN chief tells rebels to ease off

Peace talks to focus on protecting civilians

Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) liaison office chief Hassan Taib has told the group's rebels to scale down violence to create an atmosphere conducive to peace talks, a security source says.

If the BNR chief can convince young fighters, scenes like these will be scaled back as the government tries to establish a peaceful end to the southern conflict. (Bangkok Post file photo)

"It remains to be seen if there will be less violence. Mr Taib is apparently trying to give assurances that he is really in control," said the source who was in the delegation of the National Security Council (NSC) which signed an agreement with Mr Taib to pave the way for peace talks among insurgent groups on Feb 28 in Kuala Lumpur.

This is all nonsense, there is no real intent to stop the killings. An official from Narathiwat has just been killed so is this testament the violence will stop? Peace talks should not be designed to reduce the killings they should be designed to stop and a stiff warning that if the killings continue there will be serious consequences for for those orchestrating the killings. Give this government a month to halt the violence and if not remove the government and let the military take control. This would then be a good opportunity to set up a cleaner government with stiff criteria enforced regarding selection on MP's, regarding credentials.

We need the major insurgents fractions, respected Islamic clerics and Muslim incumbents in the south to speak out more against senseless violence and embrace peaceful means to settle the southern problems. The more voices and better chance of Muslim feel that they are not alone suffering in frustration, deaths and disruption in their family lives.

What will his order be , to cut from 3.5 incidents daily to what - only 1 per day. So on his say so only one innocent per day must die so these cretins can play their disgusting game in the name of what -Islam or is it a Malaysian based invasion plot after all to get the oil.

What a disgusting person he must be to go home to his wife and kids and say yep , we will only kill one a day from now on. Stop it all- now-then people would give credit.
