Local leader slain in far South

An assistant village headman was killed in a walk-up shooting in Yaring district of Pattani province on Friday afternoon, police said.

Pol Lt Narawit Ratchakijyothin, an investigator at Yaring police station, said the attack occurred about 1pm at the bird-singing contest ground in Moo 3, tambon Bang Poo.

According to witnesses, Mayae Adah, assistant chief of Ban Thakul, tambon Taloh Kapo of Yaring, was watching the contest when a gunman walked up to him, pulled out a 9mm handgun and shot him at close range. The attacker then fled.
