Pol Col Payong Sanukul, chief of Si Sakhon police station, said gunmen opened fire on the checkpoint in Moo 1, tambon Si Sakhon about 10pm, while 12 police, rangers and defence volunteers were on duty.

The security team fired back and the attackers threw four M19A1 grenades at them before withdrawing. Only three of the grenades exploded.

Ranger Thosaporn Tampeng, 26, was shot in his left leg and taken to Si Sakhon hospital. His condition was  diagnosed as critical and he was then transferred to Narathiwat Ratchanakarin hospital.

Police inspected the scene on Wednesday morning and found 54 spent cartridges from M16 and AK47 assault rifles on the ground about 80 metres from the checkpoint. They also found one unexploded M19A1 grenade near the security checkpoint.

Police blamed separatist militants.
