28 Narathiwat schools close following headmaster shooting

Almost 30 schools in Narathiwat's Waeng district cancelled their classes yesterday after the shooting of a headmaster on Thursday.

Ban Waeng School headmaster Avirute Yaseng was wounded in a drive-by shooting while he was driving his car home in tambon Sakor of Narathiwat's Sungai Padi district in the evening.

The headmaster was admitted to Sungai Kolok Hospital and is now in a stable condition.

The attack prompted 28 schools in the district to suspend classes yesterday.

The directors of the schools yesterday held a meeting with Waeng district chief Preecha Nualnoi and other security officers at Ban Waeng School to find ways to reinforce security measures for teachers.

After the meeting, more than 300 teachers, students and their parents rallied in tambon Waeng municipality to denounce the attack.

All the schools are scheduled to reopen on Monday.

Meanwhile, a senior policeman who was wounded when a motorcycle bomb exploded in tambon Kolor of Waeng district on Thursday has died.

Pol Lt Manop Tansong, of Lorjud police station in Waeng district, was travelling in a police car with his colleague, Pol Sgt Suchat Thongfai, when the bomb went off.

Pol Lt Manop was pronounced dead at Sungai Kolok Hospital yesterday.

Pol Sgt Suchat and three other villagers suffered less serious wounds.

The prime minister's security adviser Yutthasak Sasiprapa said yesterday that security measures in the far South must be overhauled as insurgents have intensified their attacks in the region.

The 15th Infantry Division must be quickly moved to the restive region to facilitate the deployment of soldiers and armaments in the area, Gen Yutthasak said.
