Five soldiers on foot patrol to provide security for teachers were wounded in an ambush by militants in Pattani's Mayo district on Thursday morning, police said.
Pol Lt Col Jirasith Loemae, deputy chief of Mayo police station, said the attack occurred about 8am near the Ban Kaen Thao intersection in tambon Ko Chan.
As a team of five soldiers were nearing the intersection the militants detonated a bomb, made from a gas cylinder and weighing about 20kg, planted on the road side. Another team of soldiers patrolling nearby opened fire at the militants, who withdrew after a brief exchange of fire.
