Both sides vow to keep peace

Thailand and Cambodia will work together to maintain border peace after the International Court of Justice's Nov 11 ruling on the Preah Vihear temple conflict, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said Thursday.

Ms Yingluck said both countries have made clear their intentions to keep the peace along the border.

She stressed the need to maintain peace with Cambodia, which will contribute to the regional development of Asean as a whole.

Ms Yingluck said people living along the border should not worry as the government and security agencies will do their best to ensure border security.

Gen Nipat Thonglek, permanent secretary for defence who sits on the Thai legal team fighting the case against Cambodia, said there is no need for Ms Yingluck to travel to The Hague in the Netherlands for the verdict, as the court would merely read its ruling.

ACM Sukumpol Suwanatat, former defence minister, travelled to The Hague to support the legal team which delivered oral statements to the court in April.

Col Thanathip Sawangsaeng, Defence Ministry spokesman, said yesterday the ministry, military leaders and security agencies will meet Ms Yingluck on Monday to provide her with information on the case.

Mr Yingluck has called an urgent meeting to discuss details of a "mechanism" to be established to respond to the court's ruling.

Nutthavudh Photisaro, deputy permanent secretary for foreign affairs, previously said the mechanism will include diplomatic, military and political measures and ways to comply with the ruling without affecting the relationship between the two countries.
