Volunteer slain in Narathiwat

A territorial defence volunteer was killed in a drive-by shooting in Narathiwat’s Sungai Kolok district early on Wednesday morning, police said.

The victim was identified as Sakree Maya-eh, 26, a resident of Sungai Kolok and a defence volunteer at the district office.

Pol Lt-Col Thaweesak Thongsongsee, Sungai Kolok deputy police chief, said the shooting occurred about 12.30am on a rural road at Ban Tuera in tambon Pasemas.

According to witnesses, Sakree was travelling on his motorcycle along the road when a gunman riding pillion on another motorcycle fired 12 shots at him with an assault rifle. The attackers then fled.

Sakree took five bullets in his head, chest, arm and torso and died on the spot.

Police found 12 spent M16 cartridges scattered on the road.

They blamed separatist militants.
