Two security officers shot in Yala attack

YALA : Two security officers were wounded in a gun attack in Bannang Sata district yesterday, police said.

The injured pair were identified as Pvt 1st Class Sunthon Jaingern, 33, and military ranger volunteer Noppadol Thapkrokerk, 25.

They were attacked after patrolling a route which many teachers use to commute between their homes and their schools.

Pvt 1st Class Sunthon sustained three bullet wounds and Mr Noppadol was shot once.

The attack took place about 8am in Ban Khuean Bang Lang, police said.

In Muang district, a group of gunmen attacked Lam Mai police station with M79 grenade launchers about 8.30pm on Monday.

No one was injured.

The attackers narrowly missed their target and the grenades landed in a rubber plantation behind the station.

Police found two craters behind the station close to a house owned by Puangsri Kaje, the plantation owner.

Ms Puangsri and her family were at home at the time, but no one was injured.

Investigators suspect Arphisi Yuso, a key figure in a separatist movement active in the Lam Mai area, was behind the attack.

Police said he carried out a similar attack on the Lam Mai station on Dec 19, 2011. No one was hurt.
