320 bombings in far South in 2013

A total of 320 bombings were reported in the southern border provinces between Jan 1 and Dec 22 last year, according to the Internal Security Operations Command (Isoc) Region 4.

Isoc Region 4 said on Monday that the bomb attacks occurred in Pattani, Narathiwat, Yala and three districts of Songkhla - Na Thawi, Sadao, Thepa and Saba Yoi.

In Pattani, there were 105 bombings. Thirty of the incidents occurred in Muang district. 

Thirteen districts of Narathiwat saw 129 bombings. Twenty-three of them were in Rangae district.

Sixty-nine bomb attacks were carried out in Yala. Twenty-seven of them were in Muang district. No bombings were reported in Betong district.

Seventeen bomb explosions took place in Songkhla's Thepa, Na Thawi and Sadao districts. No bombings were reported in Chana district.

Pattani's Muang district saw the most bombings in 2013, followed by Yala's Muang district and Narathiwat's Rangae district.

Isoc Region 4 said there were 276 reported bombings in the deep South throughout 2012.

On Monday, five rangers were wounded in a bomb explosion while on foot patrol near a school in Narathiwat's Cho Airong district and two villagers shot dead in Pattani's Nong Chik district.

In Narathiwat, a home-made bomb was detonated when a team of six rangers from Ranger Task Force 4810 was patrolling near Ban Chuwa School in tambon Marubo Ok.

The explosion, about 10am, wounded five of the six rangers, one of them seriously. They were admitted to Cho Airong Hospital.

In nearby Nong Chik district of Pattani, gunmen opened fire at villagers travelling on motorcycles to a market at Ban Tha Kubo in tambon Pulo Puyo.

Two people, a man and a woman, were killed in the attack.

In Yala's Raman district, an assistant village chief was injured in a drive-by shooting on Monday morning.

Police said the assistant village chief is Tolae Kaniseng. He was shot twice, in the shoulder and body, and was being treated at Yala Hospital.

Mr Tolae told investigators he was returning home on a bicycle after praying at a mosque. Two gunmen on a motorbike then approached him and fired at him.

Almost 6,000 people have been killed in the southern violence since Jan 4, 2004 which marked the re-emergence of separatist unrest, according to Isoc Region 4.

A total of 5,926 people have died as a result of sectarian violence in Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat as well as Chana, Thepha, Saba Yoi and Na Thawi districts of Songkhla up to Dec 31 last year, official statistics show.

Of the dead, 3,461 were Muslims and 2,431 were Buddhists. A total of 10,593 people have been injured.
