Police detain six Yala bomb suspects

Six suspects are being held in connection with the spate of bombings that rocked Yala's Muang district on Sunday and Monday, a source familiar with the investigation says.

Two of the suspects are believed to be responsible for the explosion at the provincial Office of Non-formal and Informal Education, the source said, adding that they were apprehended in Pattani's Yarang district.

The other four are suspected of rigging an explosive-laden ice cream cart which was used in one of the other blasts.

All of the suspects are residents of Yala's Bannang Sata district, according to the source, who is a member of the investigation team of Muang Yala police.

The six are being questioned about their alleged links to the bombings.

One person was killed and at least 28 others injured when seven bomb blasts, including car and motorcycle bombs, hit downtown Yala over the two days.

In one of the attacks, a powerful bomb, weighing at least 100 kilogrammes and placed in a cooking gas cylinder, was planted in a pickup truck parked in front of the Racha furniture shop on Siroros Road.

Muang Yala municipality staff were clearing the debris around the shop yesterday, but authorities said it could take up to two weeks before the clean-up is completed.

Meanwhile, a combined force of police and soldiers arrested four men during a raid on a house in tambon Tanor Putae of Bannang Sata district early yesterday. They were acting on a tip-off that suspects wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of a village headman and two female assistants in the same district on April 2 were hiding there.
