Buri Ram border may soon reopen

Security key to reopening Chong Sai Taku crossing

The Chong Sai Taku border crossing in southern Buri Ram will be reopened on June 14 if Cambodia agrees to Thai conditions to prevent the smuggling of terrorists into Thailand, authorities said on Wednesday.

Buri Ram governor Seri Srihatrai discussed conditions for the reopening of the temporary border crossing with representatives of local government offices and private organisations at the Buri Ram provincial hall on Wednesday morning.

The meeting was called ahead of planned negotiations with Cambodian authorities from adjacent Oddar Meancheay province on June 6.

After the May 22 coup, the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) closed the Chong Sai Taku border crossing in Janthopphet sub-district of Ban Kruat district in Buri Ram, saying it was to prevent armed terrorists from sneaking into Thailand to cause unrest.

The temporary border crossing links with Chup Koki village of Cambodia's Oddar Meancheay province.

The closure has affected local Thai and Cambodian traders who normally use the border crossing. The value of border trade there had risen to around 2 million baht per week before it was closed.

Thai authorities will discuss conditions for the reopening of the checkpoint with Cambodian officials, especially the security screening of border crossers.

If Cambodia agrees with the conditions, Thai authorities will also propose the temporary border crossing operate three days a week, instead of just two days, to promote border trade in the area.
