Prayuth takes over far South policy

NCPO revamps structure for handling insurgency

Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha, chief of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), on Thursday restructured solutions for the insurgency-plagued far South and took full control of policy-making for the region.

Col Banpot Phunpien, spokesman of the Internal Security Operations Command (Isoc), said Gen Prayuth approved the restructuring on Thursday morning and it took effect at policy-making and operational levels.

Solutions for the three southern border provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat are now divided into three levels.

At the policy-making level, Gen Prayuth takes charge of setting policies and guidelines for all solutions. The National Security Council (NSC) will be his adviser on policies. He will work out administrative and development policies to be implemented from 2015 to 2017.

At the level of translating policies into actions, a working group is formed to handle this. Deputy army chief Gen Udomdet Sitabutr heads the working group and NSC secretary-general Thawil Pliensri is its secretary.

The working group, through Isoc and the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Centre, will integrate  the operations of government organisations and existing mechanisms to solve problems in the far South. Solutions will cover security and development operations.

At the operational level, the southern region of Isoc handles local solutions that cover both security and development operations in the far South.
