Narathiwat woman dies in drive-by attack

NARATHIWAT — A middle-aged woman was killed in a drive-by shooting by suspected separatists in Tak Bai district on Sunday afternoon.

Dang Chankong, 62, was riding her new motorcycle home after attending her nephew’s ordination at a local Buddhist temple in Moo 5 village in tambon Pron when she was followed by two men on another motorcycle. The passenger, who was armed with a 9mm pistol, shot her three times.

Dang fell off her machine and the gunman walked towards her and fired two more shots at her at point blank range. He then fled on her motorcycle, Pol Col Lt Polkrit Khamsatian, a duty officer at Tak Bai police station, quoted a witness as saying.

The broad-daylight killing was believed to be the work of the southern insurgency movement, Pol Col Lt Polkrit said.
