Pattani blast injures three

Pattani: Three people, including a three-year-old boy, were injured when a 30-kilogramme bomb hidden in a motorcycle exploded in front of Mayo Hospital in Pattani's Mayo district yesterday, police said.

Pol Col Kong-ath Suwankham, the Mayo district police chief, said a hospital employee phoned the police after he saw a suspicious man parking a motorbike with a side car outside the hospital. The man, who wore a helmet and a black shirt, sped to another motorbike and fled.

A loud explosion went off less than 10 minutes later.

The blast wounded Rosida Taye, 25, and her son Fadil Waeto as the two were passing through the area on a motorbike.

Shrapnel cut Ms Rosida's right arm while her son received a deep cut on his back.

A hospital staff member, Nihor Doloh, 29, was also injured. The three were treated at the hospital.

A bomb disposal team led by Pol Lt Sayobmarn Maitreechorn found a damaged motorbike, pieces of a gas tank, a communication radio used to trigger the bomb and a battery at the scene.

Police said they were able to identify four men involved in the bombing.

They have been taken to a military base for further questioning. Charges have yet to be laid.
