Sarinee Sae Thong, her 54-year-old mother, was also shot in the abdomen. She later died at Betong Hospital for loss of blood.

Police found eight 9mm shells and five bullets of the same size at the secene.

Both left home in Than To district to buy food at a flea market nearby.

On their way back, two men on motorcycle caught up and shot at them until their motorcycle fell before they pulled the trigger at close range.

While the murders could be an attempt at aggravating unrest in the four southern provinces, police have not ruled out personal issues as the motive.

Also in Pattani province today, an unknown number of men gunned down Issara Chairitchoke, a teacher at Ban Kuan Tan School in Khok Pho district, according to Thairath Online.

The shooting took place near a petrol refilling station near Nikom Mitraparp in the same district.
