Prawit seeks VN's support, cooperation

Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Songsuwon has sought Vietnam's support for Thailand to sit as a non-permanent member on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) during 2017-2018. defence spokesman Kongcheep Tantravanich said on Thursday.

He has also proposed inbcreased military and security cooperation between the two countries.  

Gen Prawit, who is also defence minister, and Gen Sirichai Dithakul, the defence permanent secretary, led a Thai delegation on an official visit to Vietnam on Jan 13-15 to tighten relations between the two countries.

Col Kongcheep said during the visit Gen Prawit called on Gen Phung Quang Thanh, the Vietnamese defence minister, for consultations on security cooperation and sustainable military development.

Gen Prawit proposed the establishment of a joint committee to follow up the implementation of the two governments' policies and keep records of memorandums of understanding on cooperation between the two countries in the fields of joint training, education, science and technology, defence industry and marine security.

On marine security, the Thai side proposed joint patrols to ensure security for Thai and Vietnamese fisheries.

The Vietnamese defence minister agreed to the Thai proposal, Col Kongcheep said. He also thanked Thailand for taking care of Vietnamese people and migrant workers.

Gen Prawit also paid a courtesy call in Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.

He asked Vietnam to provide support for Thai investors to jointly improve agricultural products for export.

As Thailand has plans to set up six special economic zones along its borders, Gen Prawit sought an integrated transport system in the sub-region to promote mutual tourism, investment and trade devlopment.

He also asked Vietnam to support Thailand's application to sit as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the period of 2017-2018.

The Vietnamese prime minister thanked Thailand for taking care of Vietnamese people and workers in Thailand.  He proposed a joint memorandum of understanding  for Thailand to provide conveniences for Vietnamese workers.

He said Vietnam is ready to support and cooperate with Thailand for their mutual interest and the solidarity of Asean.
