Two Narathiwat outposts harassed

Gunmen opened fire with assualt rifles on two government outposts in Yingo and Bacho districts of Narathiwat on Monday night but the attackers inflicted no casualties, police said.

The first harassment fire was directed at an outpost manned by defence volunteers at Kubae Bado village in tambon Lubo Baya about 7.35pm. Two men drove past on a motorcycle and the pillion rider opened fire at the post with an M16 rifle.

The outpost was hit by many M16 bullets, but nobody was hurt. There was a similar attack there by militants on Aug 12 last year.

Another outpost manned by a squad from Narathiwat Task Force 32 at Ban Yuelo in tambon Bare Nua of Bacho district was similarly harassed at 7.50pm. The pillion rider on a motorcyle opened fire on the base with an M16 rifle.

The attackers fled after soldiers on sentry duty returned fire.

This outpost was raided by a group of about 50 militants on Feb 14 last year.  Soldiers manning the outpost put up stiff resistance and killed 13 of the raiders, including their leader Maroso Chantarawadi.
